4 Crucial Safety Tips for Construction Sites

Everyone wants construction to be cheap, fast, and safe. Most teams can pull off two of the three. Safety challenges in the construction industry tend to fall into three major concerns: How to avoid construction site accidents. How to keep the public safe (particularly when construction is on or nearby a road). And how to protect the property, building, or equipment on the job site. We can help with all three, so you’ll know exactly how to make a construction site safe.

In this article, we’ll break down four helpful tips for construction site safety:

  • You need trackout control (even if you think you don’t)
  • Pipe & hose ramps save you headaches
  • Curb and wedge ramps make your job easier
  • Why safety should be simple

Don’t ignore trackout control

It’s got to be awfully tempting to try to ignore trackout control. You can hope that most mud, gravel, and debris on your trucks gets knocked off as they leave the job site, just incidentally. But they probably won’t, and when someone catches you, you’ll be on the hook for a big fine for tracking a mess onto public thoroughfares and potentially into water systems too.

Trackout control systems might just be the most complicated part of a construction safety setup. Depending on the size of your construction entrance or exit, it could be a huge undertaking. Traditional stabilized construction entrances or exits require excavation, hauling in stone or gravel, and constant upkeep to turn it over or refill it as trucks drive over. And of course, you have cleanup when you’re done too.

Luckily, modern portable trackout control mats make the whole process much simpler. They install quickly and can be folded up when you’re done for easy transport and storage. Some of them, though, can be rather difficult to clean and maintain. They require additional installation tools like brackets for stability. And some don’t hold up as well in extreme weather, particularly cold temperatures.

Our RubberForm Trackout Control Mats are the simplest trackout solution on the planet. They install without brackets. They don’t require special tools for cleaning, just a little lift and a shake to get out any accumulated dirt and stone. And we manufacture them with a special composite recycled rubber and plastic material that won’t chip, crack, crumble, or corrode, no matter the searing heat, freezing cold, or heavy traffic.

Whatever method of trackout control you use, you shouldn’t ignore it. It’s not a big safety issue for your team, but it’s huge for your local community. Be a good neighbor and do trackout control right.

How do you keep pipes, hoses, and cords safe?

With ramps.

Pipes, electrical lines, and hoses that need to cross the driving path of construction vehicles can be a huge pain. There are many ways to make them cross-able. You can partially or fully bury them and cover them with gravel and dirt. This is messy and time-consuming, but works.

You could try an improvised gravel or wooden ramp. That also takes time, requires maintenance, and always runs the risk of not actually working. Which means you could have a broken pipe, cord, or hose on your hands. If it’s small enough, you might even risk driving over the pipe or hose directly and hoping for the best.

That’s why we at RubberForm designed pipe and hose ramps to be as simple to use as possible. Our 4” model covers the pipe or hose in question completely, and can be quickly assembled by hand onsite. The dovetail design means the ramp units can hook together to span any width needed. Cleanup is easy, since the pieces can be disassembled and easily carried away by hand.

How do you deal with uneven job site surfaces?

Like last time, the answer is: with ramps.

Almost any construction site is going to involve trucks mounting a surface at some point. If it involves road construction, there will likely be many points. Any uneven surfaces throughout the site introduce potential safety problems.

Trucks mounting them risk damage to tires, to shocks, to whatever load they’re carrying, and especially to the site itself. Trying to directly mount a curb is a recipe for cracked and crumbled concrete.

Common methods of preventing damage are gravel, dirt, or wood ramps. These degrade quickly and need to be replenished or replaced often. But there’s a better, tougher alternative available.

RubberForm curb and wedge ramps are tough, light, and portable. Made from recycled rubber, they’re tough enough to endure heavy vehicle traffic and the elements without warping, spalling, cracking, or crumbling. But they’re light enough to be portable without any additional equipment: they can be easily carried by hand. This means setup and teardown are quick and easy.

Why “ease of use” means safety

A big reason for cutting corners or entirely skipping elements of construction safety is time. It just takes too long to “do it right.” Every construction project is constantly backlogged and behind schedule (at least to the customer paying for it) and putting sufficient time and effort into site safety only puts you farther behind.

That’s why we’re innovating every day here at RubberForm to make the longest-lasting, easiest-to-use safety products you’ve ever seen. If proper safety can be simple and quick, we believe a lot more people will do it. That’s why our trackout control mats have a three step install process:

  1. Lift
  2. Lay out
  3. Get to work

It really is that simple. Our ramps, whether pipe & Hose or curb or wedge, are similar. You can just lay most of them down and they’re ready to go. At most you have to bolt them together. Simple safety is safety you actually use.

Don’t rely just on process or warnings to get your team to follow safety protocols. Give them tools that make their job easier to do, all while keeping them safe.

The kicker? All RubberForm construction safety products are made from US domestic recycled materials. So when you buy RubberForm, you’re helping us clean up our shared American backyard.

How are you going to prevent construction accidents?

Nobody wants an accident at a construction site. But neither do they want to invest the time and effort necessary to be confident they’ll prevent them. Make it easier on yourself and your team by using RubberForm trackout control mats, pipe & hose ramps, and curb or wedge ramps. Reuse them at job after job, keep your team safe, and keep them focused on their work, not worrying about their safety. When you’re ready to work faster, easier, and safer, give us a call.

What is the lifespan of your Trackout Control Mats?

We offer a 7-year warranty on our premier trackout blocks and a 3-year warranty on our essential blocks. Our blocks are made from a special recycled composite material that won’t chip, crack, crumble, or corrode. If you do manage to break a block, give us a call and we’ll ship you a replacement. All trackout blocks are replaceable.

How does your 4” pipe & hose ramp fit together?

Our 4” pipe ramp system consists of 2 interlocking pieces, bolted together (4 bolts per complete set). Each ramp is modular as well and has a dovetail interlock to connect to span any width of road.

How many pounds of pressure can these pipe & hose ramps withstand?

Our 2” pipe ramps are extruded with TPV Thermoplastic rubber and are construction rated.
