Outfit your school with parking lot and road safety equipment

A school’s primary mission is education, but no parent will send their child to a school that isn’t safe. School safety has many components, but one that is often overlooked (and happily, not hard to fix) is school parking lot safety.

Any time moving vehicles occupy the same general area as pedestrians, it’s a potential recipe for disaster. This is only amplified when you add children and a hectic pickup/drop-off time to the mix. Luckily, parking lot safety at school just isn’t that complicated when you have the right tools, both practical safety products and proper signage.

In this article, we will cover these key parking lot safety points:

  • School parking lots are an overlooked safety risk
  • You start with good traffic flow design
  • Signage and physical safety equipment work best together
  • You can have safety and sustainability with recycled safety products

What’s your parking lot situation?

Every situation is different, and what works for your setup might not work somewhere else. Is it a high school, middle school, or elementary? Maybe a huge combined campus?

Elementary school parking lot safety can be straightforward. If your lot is big enough you can establish one set of lanes for buses doing pickup/drop-off and a parallel but separate set for parents in cars doing the same. Have a small lot with lanes cars and buses have to share? You’ll need to think a lot harder about the flow of traffic.

High school parking lot safety is always complicated, because while you still have parent and bus pickup/drop-off mixing, you now have the added difficulty of a bunch of student drivers parking and leaving, as well as walking some distance if they park off-campus.

Either way, once you know how you want to set up the various lanes in your parking lot, you’re going to need good signage combined with safety products that enforce speed limits and lane boundaries.

What safety equipment do you need?

Safety equipment, used correctly, can not only increase parking lot safety, but improve the flow of traffic and reduce pick up times. The school parking lot safety equipment that will help you most involves both signage and enforcement measures.

Signage directs traffic flow and signals danger (like “stop” or a speed limit). Traditionally, most traffic signage has been permanently installed in the ground with concrete or asphalt. It’s ugly and unchangeable without demolition.

Portable sign bases are a perfect alternative: they can be left in place permanently if needed, but if your needs ever change or the parking lot expands, then your signage can easily move to accommodate the difference. RubberForm portable sign bases are so easy to relocate that you could have unique setups for special events, or even one setup for morning drop-off and another for afternoon pickup.

Easy-to-use sign bases:

  1. Tip the sign over
  2. Roll the round base into place
  3. The low center-of-gravity base will stay put
  4. Tip and roll again to relocate

Highly visible wheel stops ensure drivers do not drive into unauthorized areas or onto walkways. RubberForm wheel stops feature color polygons that can signal emergency vehicle, handicap, or e-charging spots. You can even customize the polygons with your colors or printed logo for school spirit that starts right from the moment anyone parks.

Speed bumps are critical to ensuring drivers obey the posted speed limits. While signage can be ignored, speed bumps cannot without risking damage to the vehicle. Both our SB-10 speed bumps and MLSB line can be installed permanently at critical points in your parking lot. Our MLSB speed bumps have the added advantage of being deployed temporarily, without anchor. They can be laid out and taken back up in minutes by a single person, meaning you can deploy them just at pickup/drop-off or just for special events.

If you need a similarly hard enforcement measure for keeping vehicles in proper lanes, then our delineator curb systems are the perfect solution to channel traffic, whether deployed permanently or temporarily.

Your students, teachers, and parents will love going green

Green technology is very important in today’s society to protect our environment. It’s one message your students may already care more about than you think. Many schools are already incorporating recycled products into their everyday routines.

Every product from our Parking and Road Safety line is made from 100% recycled rubber and plastic. All of our recycled materials are sourced domestically, within 5oo-1000 miles of our Lockport, NY factory. That means each sign base, wheel stop, or speed bump you buy is diverting waste from landfills and cleaning up America’s backyard.

Recycles doesn’t just mean green. All of our products are tough and long-lasting. That means they won’t chip, crack, crumble, or corrode in the searing heat, frigid cold, or heavy traffic your parking lot endures every day.

RubberForm products are:

    • 100% recycled
    • Made in America
  • Sourced in America
  • Durable and long-lasting
  • Easy to deploy, remove, and relocate

What’s next?

Figure out what traffic flow would best suit your particular parking situation. Then call RubberForm to see what safety products best fit your safety plan. Once they’re installed, you can rest easy and worry-free, knowing you’ve done your due diligence to keep your teachers, students, and staff safe coming and going.

Frequently Asked

What's the difference between your sign base and the plastic one I've seen for sale elsewhere?

The plastic knock-off you’ve seen is blow-molded, thin-walled plastic. That saves a lot of money for the manufacturer, but means it will break the first time it tips over or is ever so gently nudged by a vehicle. It also can crack open the first time it freezes, even without any collision. Our sign base won’t tip over even in heavy wind, and won’t chip, crack, crumble, or corrode in extreme weather or due to vehicle collision.

Does RubberForm offer a wheel stop warranty?

We stand behind our products with a 5-year product warranty from manufacturer defects. Under normal use, the RubberForm wheel stop should last for many more years. The 8 large polygons and 2 end yellow polygons are guaranteed for the lifetime of the product (if purchased directly from us).

Can we remove your speed bumps for the winter when our snowplows are on the roads?

Yes, if you need to remove them for the winter, just unbolt and store for the season. If needed, seal the holes with any silicone-based material so water, dirt, and rocks do not get lodged in them.

What's the difference between your Engineered Rubber Curb and Engineered Traffic Curb?

They’re very similar, but the biggest difference is that the Traffic Curb is a solid piece, closer to the shape of a traditional concrete curb. The Rubber Curb is rounded, can be mounted by vehicles, and flexible enough to be formed into curves (like for a Mini Roundabout).
